In much of my career, I have changed positions so much, and with my consulting I have often had the role of temporary guest/visitor.
A key part of that is the contrast between the sojourner and the locals. The locals have a certain stability and security in the immediate situation which the sojourner lacks. Because the locals are committed to their community, they can be bestowed local authority which the sojourner can never have. Where the locals can command, the sojourner must suggest.
But the sojourner brings a broader perspective. Stationary commitment invariably brings a narrower awareness. To some degree, the sojourner acts as a window between the local community and the world beyond. Windows
