Dark Souls (and to a lesser degree its sequels) has become one of the biggest holistic inspirations for my artwork, both in game design, story design, world design, and visual design.
The first game is my favorite of the trilogy.
It does the best job of any game I’ve seen of creating a beautiful 3D world that I just want to hang out in, and giving me interesting things to do in that world.
The style and the substance are so effectively and holistically integrated.
It’s one of those rare works of art where most of its flaws add further character.
The sequel feels thrown together and empty compared to the first game, but it has its moments and is full of good ideas.
The third game is my second favorite.
